Tuncer Baykara

Historian. He was born on July 7, 1940 in Yatağan village / Acıpayam/ Denizli. After completing his primary and secondary education in Denizli; he attended Istanbul University, Faculty of Sciences, Department of Chemical Engineering for a short period. He graduated from Ataturk University, Faculty of Literature, Department of History with the thesis “XIX. Yüzyılda Aydın Eyaleti” (1966). He completed his doctoral studies at the same department (1971). His doctoral thesis: “XI. Yüzyıla kadar Türk Tarihinde ‘Şehir”.

After completing his military services (1972-1973), he started to work at Hacettepe University as an assistant. He worked in the same place as lecturer and as an associate professor (1973-1987). He worked as the chair of subdivision at the same department. In 1987, he was appointed as the professor of History of Turkish Republic at Ege University, Faculty of Literature. He continued to work as the head of History of Turkey Subdivision. He worked as the Director of Ege University Ataturk Principles and History of Revolution Research and Application Center (1988-1996) and as the department chair (1988-1999). He is the regular member of Turkish Historical Society and Institute of Research on Turkish Culture.

He stayed in Belgium, Japan (three months), Taiwan, Germany, Russia, Israel, Azerbaijan, Greece, France and Kazakhstan, attending several congresses and meetings. He was the head of Department History at Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University in Bishkek (1998-1999). He participated in the organization committee of 14^th symposium of CIEPO in Çeşme (September, 2000).

Baykara has several articles published in several journals; and he is known with his research on the issues of settlement; the situation of concepts such as “city”, “urbanization”, “civilization” and “culture” for Turks; the condition of Turkish life in material culture; geography and historical geography; historical geography of Anatolia and Turkic countries; history of Turkey in 19^th and 20^th centuries; transition of Turkish history; foundations of Turkish settlement in Anatolia and the transition period from Byzantium  to Turkish rule. He continued his studies as a lecturer at Ege University Faculty of Literature and as the head of Ataturk Principles Department. He is the member of Turkish Historical Society and Institute of Research on Turkish Culture.

His articles were published in several journals and newspapers such as Yatağan, Hür Efe, Tarih İncelemeleri Dergisi, Türk Yurdu, Kırım, Bilge, Erdem, Türk Dünyası Araştırmaları Dergisi, Belleten, Ata, Yeni Asır, Arış, EÜEF. Tarih İncelemeleri Dergisi, EÜEF. Tarih İncelemeleri Dergisi, Ege Mimarlık, Yeni Türkiye, Türk Kültürü and in edited books such as Tanzimat’ta Şehir ve Belediye (1992), 150. Yılında Tanzimat (1992),  Vakıf Haftası Kitabı (1993). He wrote articles for TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi. He attended to several national and international symposiums and submitted papers on his area.
