Writer and translator (b. 1910, Tirebolu /
Giresun - d. 19 March 1980, Ankara).
He graduated from Galatasaray High School (1932) and Paris Lyon University, Faculty of Literature,
Department of French Language and Literature. On his return to Turkey, he became an assistant at Ankara University,
Faculty of Language History and Geography. Becoming professor (1943) and chair
at this university, he worked there for more than 35 years. He worked as a
theatre teacher at the State Conservatory for nearly 10 years. After the 27 May
Revolution, he participated in the activities of the Constitutional Assembly as
a university representative and became Minister of National Education between 8
September 1960 and 5 January 1961. He was elected as the General Conference
President of UNESCO between 1966 and 1968. He did about 20 translations from
Moliere, Musset and Camus. He received the International Grand Literature Award
by the Union of French Writers for his services to French language and
literature in 1973.
