Writer and translator (b. 8 August 1942,
İstanbul - d. 28 November 1995, Istanbul). He attended Robert College (1961). He went to
Germany and learned German. He was educated in the oil business in Austria. He
returned to Turkey and attended İstanbul University, Faculty of Law for a
while. He worked as a writer and translator.
Starting from 1965, his essays and
research were published in Yeni Dergi,
Papirüs, Anıt, Politika, Yürüyüş, Varlık, Bilim ve Sanat reviews and
newspapers. He translated from famous writers such as M. Rosenthal, P. Pudin,
Stanislavski, Camus etc. His play Rasputin (Rasputin) won the Turkish National Students Association 1965
Award and also he won the Art Award Competition Achievement Award with his play
Cendere (The Mangle).
Çalışlar, who worked as a member of the
Writers Syndicate of Turkey Executive Board, also supervised the theatre works
of Boyut Publications. He died in poverty suffering from throat cancer. When
his estate wasn’t enough for funeral expenses, the Ministry of Culture allocated
a grave for him in the Aşiyan Graveyard. His funeral was paid for by his
friends and colleagues.
