Güngör Tekçe

Poet and writer (b. 17 September 1937, İstanbul) - d. 9 February 2022, Bodrum / Muğla. His full name is Ali Güngör and he is the husband of the translator Güray Ataş. Mehmat Ali Laga (1878-1947), one of the first military painters was his great-uncle and Şeyh Muhammed Zâfir (? - 1907), who was one of the leaders of Şazeli mystical sect, was his mother’s grandfather. He attended Taksim Primary School (1949), Saint Michel French College and Galatasaray elementary class (1956) and graduated from Galatasaray High School (1962) and Istanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Sociology (1972). He passed the entrance exam of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation in 1965 and started to work as a text writer and program producer. He was appointed to the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, İzmir Radio as the Director of Theater Programs in 1973. 

He left this post in 1998 and returned to the corporation’s İstanbul Radio. His first poetry translations were published in the review Varlık beginning in 1956 to 1964 while he was a student at Galatasaray High School. A long while after, his poems were published again in reviews such as Varlık, İnsancıl, Öküz, Papirüs, Edebiyat ve Eleştiri, E and Cumhuriyet Kitap. In addition, at various times his poems and interviews have been broadcasted by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation and by many private radio and television companies. With his poem Kadınistan (The Land of Women) in 1991, he received an honorable mention at a competition held by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality on the subject of “Woman”. He won the Cemal Süreya Poetry Award for An Unpublished File held by the review Aydınlık with his file Seğiren (One That Trembles). Beginning in 1965, he prepared radio programs for the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, İstanbul Radio such as Türkiye'nin Sorunları (Turkey’s Problems), Anadolu Efsaneleri (Anatolian Legends), İki Oyun Dört Konuk (Two Plays, Four Guests), Bozkır Rüzgarı (Wind of the Steppe) and Mutluluğa Çağrı (Invitation to Happiness).
