Businessman, founder of Özyeğin University. He was born in 1945 in İzmir. After having graduated from Robert College, he went to USA to study Construction Engineering in Oregon State University where he discovered that he was better in finance issues (1967). Özyeğin, who returned to Turkey after having got his master’s degree at Harvard (1969) and worked for three years in USA, became the General Manager of Pamukbank upon the offer of Mehmet Emin Karamehmet, his friend from the college, when he was 32 years old. In 1984, he became the General Manager of Yapı Kredi Bank. Working as the General Manager of Yapı Kredi Bank between 1984 and 1987, Hüsnü Özyeğin, left Yapı ve Kredi Bank in 1987 and established his own bank; Finansbank.
Özyeğin, who has more than 30 companies in the Fiba Companies Group, sold Gima and Endi he had purchased in 1996 to Carrefoursa, the 40% partner of Sabancı Holding. He purchased Swissotel the Bosphorus in Istanbul in April 2005 for approximately 100 million USD and stepped in the tourism sector.
Hüsnü Özyeğin, who was listed among the Forbes billionaires in 2005 for the first time, was the 620th with 1 billion USD. He was the first among “the wealthiest 100 Turks” list of Forbes by March 2009 with a fortune of 2.9 billion USD. He accomplished to become the wealthiest 221st person of the world according to the global research carried out by Forbes magazine in 2009.
Hüsnü M. Özyeğin is also the Executive Board Member in Credit Europe Bank - Switzerland, Credit Europe Bank – the Netherlands, Credit Europe Bank – Russia and Credit Europe Bank – Ukraine; Executive Board Member in Mother and Child Education Foundation; Chief of Board of Trustees at Özyeğin University; and a member of Dean’s Advisory Committee in Harvard Business School. The Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation, where he is the Chairman of the Executive Board, founded Özyeğin University in Istanbul on May 18th, 2007.
