Master of Karagöz shadow
play, theater and cinema player. (B. 1898, Beyoğlu / Istanbul – D. 1st April 1944, Istanbul). His real name was Kâzım Körmükçü. The theater and cinema
players Pelin Körmükçü and Hazım Körmükçü are his grandchildren. His father was
a solfeggio teacher in the Military Band (the music school or orchestra of the
palace). He was interested in music because of the profession of his father and
he started to play many instruments. He studied in Şemsülmekâtip and then, he graduated
Körmükçü entered into the movie sector by the end of the 1920s and became one of the well-known actors of the movies directed by Muhsin Ertuğrul. The artist, who played the leading role in many movies, was also a master of Karagöz shadow play. Right along with his acting career, he also directed a movie and wrote the script of a movie. In one period, he worked as a vender of the national lottery tickets. The master actor presented successful acts in the following cinema movies: Ankara Postası (1928), Kaçakçılar (1929), Istanbul Sokaklarında (1931), Bir Millet Uyanıyor (1932), Leblebici Horhor Ağa (1933), Söz Bir Allah Bir (1933), Karım Beni Aldatırsa (1933), Düğün Gecesi (Kanlı Nigar, 1933), Milyon Avcıları (1934), Aysel Bataklı Damın Kızı (1935), Aynaroz Kadısı (1938), Allah’ın Cenneti (1939), Tosun Paşa (1939), Bir Kavuk Devrildi (1939), Akasya Palas (1940), Kahveci Güzeli (1941), Nasreddin Hoca Düğünde (1943), Domaniç Yolcusu / Unutulan Sır (1946), Mahallenin Namusu (1953).
The name of the grandson of Hazım Körmükçü is also Hazım Körmükçü and he is also a theatre and cinema player. The theatre and cinema player Pelin Körmükçü is also one of his grandchildren. When the grandfather Körmükçü died in Istanbul, more than 5.000 fans of him participated in his funeral ceremony. The Istanbul Municipal Theatre declared 2 days of mourning upon his death and didn’t open its curtains.
