Poet. It is rumored that he was born in 1018 in Balasagun where he wrote his famous work Kutadgu Bilig (The Wisdom of Royal Glory) He grew up taking Arabian and Persian lessons as well as the sciences of his age. Having completed in 1069, he presented the first known work of Turkish Literature after Islam, Kutadgu Bilig to Sultan Ebu Ali Hasan in the capital of Karahan State, Kaşgar. Because of his work, Sultan appointed him to his palace as the chamberlain (Has Hacip).
Kutadgu Bilig is one of the most important resources of the Turkish language and literature together with Divan-ü Lügati't-Türk (Compendium of the Turkic Dialects) of Mahmud al-Kashgari. “Kutadgu Bilig is a mesnevi* that is a didactic work on morality, ideal life and government and generally was written faülün faülün faülün faül meter of prosody meter consisting nearly 6500 couplets.” (Behçet Necatigil).
The last scientific edition of the work was prepared by Prof. Dr. Reşit Rahmeti Arat (in two volumes, text and translation, 1947, 1959). There are three manuscripts in Fergana, Egypt and Vienna.
