Journalist and writer (b. 9 December 1942, İstanbul - d. 17 January 2013, İstanbul)). He graduated from Galatasaray High School and from Istanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of English Philology. He began to work as a journalist at the newspaper Milliyet in 1964. He was the manager of the newspaper’s offices in Brussels (1972) and Moscow (1984). As well as his books on the subjects of the Cyprus Military Operation of Peace, on the relations with the European Economic Community, Turkish Military Forces and on the Coup d’Etat on 12 September; he was known for his the television program 32. Gün, which was broadcast first in 1985. He was elected as European Journalist of the Year in 1979. Mehmet Ali Birand has won various awards from the Turkish Union of Journalists as well as the Sedat Simavi Association Mass Communication Award in 1984 and the Presentation Award of the Turkish Presentation Foundation in 1985. He has also written articles and done interviews for the newspaper Milliyet.
