Mete Tunçay

History researcher (b. 1936, İstanbul). He graduated from Beyoğlu Atatürk High School and Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences (1958). He started working as an assistant in the field of political theory at the same faculty. He submitted his dissertation thesis for his doctorate of philosophy in 1961. He became assistant professor with his thesis titled Türkiye'de Sol Akımlar (Leftist Movements in Turkey). He left the faculty in 1966; later he served as the Head of the Publication Department at the Ministry of Culture and consultant at the National Library (1974-77). He worked for many years as an academician at the Faculty of Political Science to where he returned in 1978. Upon being removed from the university under law 1402 of the Higher Education Council in 1983, he started working at a publishing house. He became editor-in-chief at the review Tarih ve Toplum after 1984. From 1995, he worked both as an academician at Marmara University and administrator at the Turkish History Foundation.

His first article was published in the review Forum in 1957. His articles also were published in reviews such as Tarih ve Toplum, Toplumsal Tarih etc. He translated into Turkish many Western writers such as Aristotle, Hume, Lipset and Popper. He translated İslâm Dünyası (The Islamic World, by F. Robinson), which is the first volume of the encyclopedic series Atlaslı Büyük Uygarlıklar Ansiklopedisi (Encyclopedia of Great Civilizations with Maps) published by İletişim Publications (1986). He is a member of the Helsinki Citizens Assembly and the Turkish History Foundation.
