Politician and statesman, deputy,
minister (B. 1910,
Istanbul- D. September 16, 1961- Imrali). His
family is from Esenyaka (Zor) village, Yusufeli, Artvin. He graduated from Galatasaray
High School, Paris
University Faculty of Political Sciences and Geneva University Faculty of Law. He started to serve in Foreign Affairs Ministry (1936). He
attended to Montreux Conference; and worked as a central cipher director in
Paris and Kuybisef. He was appointed as head clerk of
Bern Embassy in 1939. He was appointed as Economic Affairs Vice General
Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1950. After working at several
positions within Foreign Affairs Ministry, he became the General Secretary of
Organization of Economic Cooperation in 1951. In 1952, he became an Ambassador
and became the permanent representative of Turkey in NATO.
He was elected as Çanakkale Deputy
in 1954 general elections from Democrat Party (1954). In 1957, he became deputy
for DP again. He worked as Vice Prime Minister (1954-1956), Minister of State
(1957) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1957-1960) in the governments of Menderes. He was one of the strongest members of Menderes cabinets. He
did not give up from NATO and he played a determinant role for Turkey to be bound to USA, ignoring the Middle Eastern
and third world countries. His five year long
ministry and six year long deputy position ended with May 27, 1960 Military
Coup. He was put on trial in High
Justice Court at Yassiada and was sentenced to
death and executed together with Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and Finance
Minister Hasan Polatkan. His body was transferred to the Mausoleum in Istanbul on September 17,
1990, twenty nine years after his death.
