Kara Fazlı, Mehmed Fazli

Poet (b. ? - d. 1564, Kütahya). According to some sources, his real name was Ali or Mehmed Fazli and he was a member of the Halvetiye dervish order. He was supported by the famous poet of the time, Zati. He inspired Kanuni Sultan Süleyman with the eulogy he read at the circumcision party of the Şehzade (Sultan's son) Mehmet. After this event, he served as the clerk of the councils of Şehzade Mehmet, Mustafa and Selim. In the reign of Süleyman, his last office was at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1562).

Fazli's poems are praised in biographies of the period. His Divan*, which is believed to exist, has not yet been found. He wrote about a thousand mystic rubai*s.

Hümâ ve Hümâyûn (Bird of Paradise and Royal, 5000 couplet poems), Gül ve Bülbül (The Rose and The Nightingale, his most famous work presented to Şehzade Mustafa, completed in 1533, printed in Petresti with its German edition in 1834), Naklistan (Garden of Truth, prose stories in the style of the Gülistan -Rose Garden by Sadi.)
