Researcher and
writer (B. 30 April 1911, Fatih / İstanbul - D. 5 June 2004, İstanbul). He graduated from Italian
Secondary School (1929), Saint Michel French High
School (1932), Galatasaray High School (1933), İstanbul University Faculty of
Letters Department of Turkish Language and Literature (1938). His final thesis
was “Miracnâme” (Book of Ascending to
the Sky), and associate professorship thesis was “A. Hamid'in Dili ve Üslubu” (The Idiom and Style of A. Hamid,
1941).
He started
working as academician in İstanbul University (1941-43) and carried on in
London (1943 48, 50-54), Oxford (1948-50), again İstanbul (1954-70), Chicago
(1970-74) and Boğaziçi (1977-85) universities. Moreover, he worked as guest
professor in Tülingen (Germany), New York and Columbia (USA), Mc Gill and
Toronto (Canada) universities. His first published article is Bay
article in the second volume (1943) of Islamic Encyclopedia.
