Art
historiographer and philosopher (b. 1908, İstanbul - d. 1985). He was the
husband of Nazan İpşiroğlu and father of Zehra İpşiroğlu. He studied philosophy
and history of art at the Universities of Bonn, Hamburg and Berlin and painting
at Düsseldorf Academy of Painting. He received his doctorate in philosophy at
the University of Bonn (1933). He was appointed to assistant professor (1934)
and then to professor (1943) at İstanbul University, Faculty of Literature,
Department of Philosophy. He worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Literature
(1948-49, 1958-59) where he was appointed to the Head of the Department of Art
History (1949). He retired in 1977.
He
founded İstanbul University Film Centre together with Sabahattin Eyuboğlu (1956).
The documentary film Hitit Güneşi (The Hittite Sun), which they prepared
in collaboration, received the second prize at the Berlin Film Festival in
1956. He prepared another seven documentary films with Eyuboğlu such as Surname
(Surname*, 1957) and Kapalı Çarşı (The Grand Bazaar, 1974). His essays
and articles were published in the reviews Felsefe Denemeleri Dergisi
(1939) and Felsefe Arkivi (1949) and in the İstanbul University
Bulletin.
