Historian (b. 1917, Mamış / Kars – d.
10 February 2005, Ankara). After completing primary and secondary education in
Kars, he graduated from Erzurum High School (1934). He returned to Kars before
graduating from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, where he studied for
just one year (1935-1936). Next year he worked for the Ministry of Finance in
Arpaçay. After serving again as a civil servant at the Ministry of Finance in
Posof (1936-37) and junior teacher at Kars High School (1938-41), he graduated
from İstanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of History (1946).
He served as history teacher in Kars (1948), Diyarbakır (1951) and Sakarya
(1957) High Schools. Later, he worked as Assistant Director of the Department of
Archives at the Ministry of National Education, and as a specialist on the Türk Ansiklopedisi
(Turkish Encyclopedia). When he received his doctorate at Erzurum Atatürk
University he became a member of the teaching staff (1967), assistant professor
(1975), professor and finally the Head of the Department of History all at the
same university.
