Osman F. Seden

Film director, scriptwriter, producer, actor (B. March 22nd, 1924, Istanbul – D. August 29th, 1998, Istanbul). His full name was Osman Fahir Seden. He was the son of filmmaker Kemal Seden, who opened one of the first movie theaters and established the first private film production company (Kemal Film). After he graduated from German High School, he completed Istanbul University, Faculty of Law. He entered into the film world by dubbing the foreign films that were brought by Kemal Film. He began producing and scriptwriting when the company started producing Turkish films after 1951. He wrote his first scenario (Istanbul Kan Ağlıyor) in 1951, he directed his first film (Kanlarıyla Ödediler) in 1955.

During the first years of him as a film director, he collaborated with Lütfü Akad, one of the well-known directors of the period that was named as “the Filmmakers Era”, which came after the period of the theatre players. In this period, he directed the films İntikam Alevi and Bir Avuç Toprak by making small changes in the theme of the films Katil and Beyaz Mendil of Akad. After 1960s, he started producing comedy, detective-adventure comedy and musical films. He kept up with the fashion of those times and produced films for commercial purposes by benefiting from the fame of the artists, particularly voice artists, who were not in the film industry. He directed the films Berduş, Altın Kafes, Gurbet, Kırık Plak and Aşk Hırsızı, all of which except Aşk Hırsızı portrayed Zeki Müren as a singer, and directed films based on child characters such as Ayşecik Yavru Melek, Katilin Kızı. Bana Annemi Anlat. He reflected his own identity of a filmmaker with the films Namus Uğruna and Çalıkuşu that he adapted into film from the Reşat Nuri Güntekin’s work of the same title. The Ministry of Culture entitled him, the director that won many awards during his art life as the State Artist in 1991.
