Poet (b. 1608,
İstanbul - d. 1666). His real name was Mustafa Çelebi but he was known as
Nailî-i Kadim. He was given a good education and served as a secretary at the
Imperial Council and he was promoted to chief caliph. He presented eulogies but
he was not respected. Throughout his life, he experienced great difficulties
and in his later years he was exiled to Edirne by the Grand Vizier Fazıl Ahmet
Paşa.
Nailî-i Kadim became
successful especially in writing odes and became one of the famous divan*
poets. He employed the Sebk-i Hindî style in his poems. His poems, written with
the principles of an orderly, compatible and elaborate discourse, give a good
example of the poets of the Tanzimat period, along with Namık Kemal, Leskofçalı
Galip, Yenişehirli Avnî. His Divan* was published by Haluk İpekten with the
title Nailî-i Kadim Divanı (Divan* of Nailî-i Kadim, 1970).
