Mustafa Oğuz Demiralp

Essay writer, diplomat. He was born on January 22, 1952 in Istanbul. His full name is Mustafa Oğuz Demiralp. He graduated from Istanbul Saint Joseph High School (1971) and Middle East Technical University (1976). After working at several jobs in banking and commercial sector (1976-1978), he started to work as the second clerk at Foreign Affairs Ministry, Multilateral Security General Directorate (1978-1980). He worked as a vice consulate in Munich Head Consulate and as a NATO Assembly of Parliamentarians consultant for Turkish Committee (1980-1983) and as the head clerk of Tehran Embassy (1983-1985). He has also worked as a branch manager at Political Planning Office liable from contemporary political issues, ECSC and disarmament (1985-1987), Undersecretary of Turkish Permanent Representation at United Nations Geneva Office (1987-1991), Director of ECSC Office (1991-1993), Vice permanent representative at Turkish Permanent Representation in European Council (1993-1997), and as a special consultant of Foreign Minister (1997-2000). After becoming an ambassador in 2000; he worked as a Turkish Permanent Representative at World Trade Organization (WTO), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Council Vice President, WTO Trade and Investment Working Groups Presidency (2000-2001), WTO Trade and Environment Committee President (2002-2003). He worked as an ambassador and Turkish permanent representative between 2002 and 2005, and he was appointed as the General Secretary for European Union on December 31, 2005.

He published his articles and translations in Yeni Dergi, Yazı (published by his friends) and Cehennemde Bir Mevsim, Yeni Dergi, Somut, Doğu-Batı, Gergedan, Soyut, Oluşum, Argos journals and in Dünya newspaper (1978-1979). He tried to establish a “special” metaphysics in his essays on literature and he made analytic comments on the works of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar, Oğuz Atay, Yusuf Atılgan, İsmet Özel, Walter Benjamin, and Sadık Hidayet.
