Man of thought and researcher
of philosophy (b. 1938, Kırşehir – d. 24 April 1983, İstanbul). He grew up in
an educated and pious family. After completing his elementary and secondary
education in his hometown, he graduated from Istanbul University, Faculty of
Literature, Department of Philosophy (1961). He became the assistant of Prof.
Mümtaz Turhan in social psychology at the same department. He completed his
doctorate studies in 1965, and specialized at University of Colorado, Faculty
of Behavioral Sciences in the United States (1966-67). On his return, he was
appointed as an associate professor to İstanbul University, Faculty of
Literature, Department of Social Psychology (1971). He became a professor in
1978 and the rector of the Konya Selçuk University in 1982. He died in
İstanbul. Specialized on social change and social values, Güngör drew attention
of the scientific milieu with his thesis for associate professorship titled “Şahıslar
Arası İhtilafın Psikolojisi” (The Psychology of Dispute between
Individuals).
His essays were published in
the reviews Diriliş, Türk Edebiyatı, Hisar Töre, Hamle and in the
newspapers Orta Doğu and Millet. He continued his scientific
studies even after he was appointed as the rector to Konya Selçuk University (1982).
He received the Writers Union of Turkey Research-Study Award in 1981 with his
book İslâm Tasavvufunun Meseleleri (The Problems of Islamic Sufism). He
was working on his book with the title Türkiye’de Batılılaşma
(Westernization in Turkey) just before his death.

Besides, he translated many works from English and French.
