Poet (b. 11
March 1891, İstanbul – d. 18 October 1949, Ankara). He attended primary and
secondary school in Thessalonica, Skopje and İstanbul. He received higher
education at Mülkiye Mektebi (School of Political Sciences) (1913). He was recruited to the
Ministry of War and served as a consul in Bucharest (1915) and then as first
consul in the same city (1916). He met Ahmet Hikmet Müftüoğlu in Budapest and
married a French woman. On his return home, he was appointed to the Directorate
of Legislative Works in the Province of Edirne. He divorced his wife and
married the daughter of Fahri Paşa. Later on, he worked as the Head of Business
Management at the Chair of Economics (1936) and as the Undersecretary of the
Ministry of Employment. He was dismissed from his office after he joined the
Democrat Party and became a parliamentary candidate. His later years were lived
in relative poverty. He is buried in Cebeci Graveyard.
His first poems, which were
published in the review Şehbal
(1912-14), were influenced by the “Scientific Wealth Movement”. Later, he used
syllabic meter in his poems and joined the “Nationalist Literature Movement”.
One of the famous “Five-Syllable” poets, Enis Behiç’s most famous poems are the
lyric ones, those weaved with nationalist feelings. In addition, he wrote
lyrical and theosophical poems by necromancy, which he claimed was inspired by
Çedikçi Süleyman Çelebi, the mevlevi sheikh. Ömer Fevzi Mardin wrote a work of
three volumes with the title Varidat-ı
Süleyman Çelebi (Virtues of Süleyman Çelebi, 1951) on these sessions of
necromancy.
