Elçin İlyasoğlu Efendiyev

Story and novel writer, statesman. He was born on May 13, 1943 in Baku / Azerbaijan. His full name is Elchin Efendiyev İlyasoğlu. He used the pseudonym Elçin in his works. His father Ilyas Efendiyev (1914- October 3, 1996) was among the famous writers of Azerbaijan. After completing his secondary education in Baku, Elçin received education at the Faculty of Language and Literature of Azerbaijan State University. He was accepted as an assistant to Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, Institute of Languages and Literature with the decision of scientific committee. He became a member of Soviet Writers’ Union in 1968, and also worked as the secretary of Azerbaijan Writers’ Union executive board and also at the redaction council of Edebiyat ve İncesanat newspaper. He became the president of Vatan Union, which executed the relations with Azerbaijan citizens living abroad. He was the Vice Prime Minister of Azerbaijani Government since 1993.

His first story was published in 1959. He became a philology doctor with his thesis named Azerbaycan Bedii Nesri Edebî Tenkitte” in 1970. Elçin also gave lectures at Baku State University as a professor of theories of literature. His stories and novels were published in different languages such as Russian, German, English, French, Hungarian, Arabic, Spanish, Persian and Turkish. He has also translated many works from several languages of the world. He is famous with his different style and utilizing supernatural styles. His critic on Azerbaijani stories and novels was selected as the “Best article” of 1973 by Drujba Narodov journal. His stories have received several awards from Soviet Writers’ Union and Nedelya weekly journal (1982), Literaturnaya Gazeta (1983) and by Smena journal (1977 and 1984). His works Şuşa Dağlarını Duman Bürüdü (1994), Ölüm Hükmü (1996), Mahmut ile Meryem and Ak Deve were published in Turkey by Otuken Publishers. His interesting story named Tiren, Picasso, La Tour (1968) was published in the journal Türk Edebiyatı (June 1991, issue: 212).

Elçin is among the prominent names of contemporary Azerbaijan literature and he is famous as story, critics, scenario and theater writer. He received a Honorary Award from Fatih University in 2003.
