Aydın Taneri

Historiographer (b. 17 January 1932, Kadıköy / İstanbul - d. 1 December 1997, Bodrum / Muğla). In fact he is from Afyon and is the son of Doctor Captain Nurettin Taneri. He was educated in Ankara because his father was a state official there. He attended Samanpazarı Private Işık Primary School, Dördüncü Secondary School (today known as Cebeci) and graduated from Atatürk High School and Ankara University, Faculty of Language and History and Geography (1959). He became an assistant at this faculty in 1962. He did his PhD in 1967; he became an associate professor in 1972 and professor in 1978. His PhD thesis was “Osmanlı İmparatorluğunun Kuruluş Döneminde Vezir-i Azamlık” (Grand Viziers at the Foundation Period of the Ottoman Empire). His thesis for becoming a professor was “Osmanlı İmparatorluğunun Kuruluş Döneminde Hükümdarlık Kurumu ve Saray Hayatı Teşkilatı” (Sovereignty and the Organization of Palace Life at the Foundation Period of the Ottoman Empire). He gave revolution history lessons at Ankara University from 1982. He also gave lectures on revolution history of the Republic of Turkey and Kemalism at the War School and the Police Academy.

Nearly one thousand of his essays were published from 1947 in magazines and newspapers such as Cumhuriyet, Tercüman, Hürriyet, Forum, Hergün, Yeni Sözcü, Töre, Bizim Ocak, Yeni Forum, DTCF Tarih Araştırmaları, İ.Ü Tarih Enstitüsü, Millî Kültür, Forum, Yeni Hizmet, Ortadoğu, Güneş, Türkiye, and Yeni Düşünce. He gave communiqués at scientific meetings. Also he wrote many articles for the İslâm Ansiklopedisi (Encyclopedia of Islam) and TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi (Islamic Encyclopedia of the Religious Association of Turkey). He died of lung cancer. He spoke English, French and Persian. He is buried at Bodrum Turgut Reis Karabağlar Graveyard.
