Poet and writer (b. 1896, İstanbul – d. 24 September 1973). Her full name was Şükufe Nihal Başar. She completed her primary and secondary education at private schools and graduated from İstanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Geography (1919). She worked as a geography and literature teacher at various schools and at İstanbul High School for Girls for many years. She retired in 1953. She was among the founders of Union of Turkish Women.

She wrote her first poems with the influence of Tevfik Fikret. She was especially influenced by his work Halûk’un Defteri (Haluk’s Diary). Later she adopted the style of the “National Literature Movement” and used syllabic meter. Her poems were found to be more successful after she abandoned the style of Tevfik Fikret in her works. Her first poems were published in the magazines Şair and Nedim (1918-19). They were also published in the magazines Aydabir, Çınaraltı and Şadırvan from 1935. She attached great importance to women in her poetry.

NOVEL: Renksiz Istırap (The Colorless Agony, 1928), Yakut Kayalar (The Ruby Rocks, 1931), Çöl Güneşi (The Desert Sun, 1933), Yalnız Dönüyorum (I Am Returning Alone, 1938), Domaniç Dağlarının Yolcusu (The Traveler of the Domaniç Mountains, 1946), Çölde Sabah Oluyor (The Sun Rises in the Desert, 1951).

SHORT STORY: Tevekkülün Cezası (The Cost of Resignation, 1928).

TRAVEL LITERATURE: Finlandiya (Finland, 1935).
