Academician, professor of Gastroenterology, author. Prof. Dr. Halil Değertekin, was born in Varto in 1947. He completed his primary and secondary education in Diyarbakır. He entered Istanbul University School of Medicine in 1964 and graduated in 1970. In the same year, he started his academic life in Department of Internal Medicine at Diyarbakir University School of Medicine.
In 1975, he passed the
international medical examination, the ECFMG. He recompleted Gastroenterology
Subspecialty Fellowship at Ankara University School of Medicine lty between
1976-1978. He became an Associate Professor in 1981.
Between 1982-1984, he worked as a
"Research Fellow" at Tulane University in New Orleans, USA. He became
a Professor in 1987. He left Dicle University in 2006.
He has 50 scientific publications
in PubMed and nearly 100 scientific publications in Turkish and seven
scientific book contributions in the field of medicine (Gastroenterology and
Hepatology). He has national and international publications that contribute to
science on the epidemiology of liver diseases (Hepatitis B and Hepatitis D) in
Southeastern Anatolia.
As a cultural activity; Between
1990 and 2000, he chaired the Diyarbakir Branch of the Diyarbakir Culture and
Solidarity Foundation (Diyarbakır Tanıtma, Kültür ve Yardımlaşma Vakfı). The
historical and cultural richness of Diyarbakir, especially the Diyarbakir City
Walls, have been published in research, reports and photographic studies. He
contributed to the efforts for Diyarbakir Walls to be on the UNESCO World
Cultural Heritage list.
In his book “BİR EV, BİR SOKAK,
BİR ŞEHİR…”(A HOUSE, A STREET, A CITY…) published in 2012, he wrote an
autobiography-local history about Diyarbakır of his childhood and youth years
between 1950-1970.
In 2013, the story book named “ZAMANIN
TANIĞI” (WITNESS OF TIME) was published.
His historical documentary novel
“MUHACIRLER”, which tells the story of the immigrants (including his own
family) from the eastern front during the 1st World War, made two editions in
2105 and 2017. This work was filmed as a documentary by TRT.
The novel “68’Lİ YILLAR”, which
tells about university memories and 1968 student protests, was published at the
beginning of 2021.
He is currently the Chairman of
Internal Medicine and Head of Gastroenterology Department at Ufuk University
School of Medicine in Ankara.
He is a member of various medical
societies, as well as DİTAV, ÇEKÜL and Tarih Vakfı. He is fluent in English. He
is married, has three children and four grandchildren.
