Yusuf Sinaneddin (asıl adı)

Poet (b. 1371?, Kütahya - d. 1431?). His real name was Yusuf Sinaneddin. He lived during the reign of Murad I, Yıldırım Beyazıt and Murad II. He began his education in Kütahya and then went to Iran to study theosophy and medicine. When he returned home, he went to Ankara and was attached to Hacı Bayram-ı Velî, hence his title Şeyhî (Sheikh). He gained fame when he was appointed as the doctor of Yakub II, the ruler of the principality of German, Kütahya. He treated Çelebi Sultan Mehmed, who was ill during the campaign in Karaman (1415). He was given lands in Tokuzlu village as a reward for his success. However, he was robbed on his way to the village by the former owners of the land and he wrote his famous work Harname (The Book of the Ass) in order to inform Sultan Murad II about the situation. He was kept in the palace for a while, where he presented eulogies to Murad II and here he began to write his couplet poem Husrev ü Şirin (Hüsrev and Şirin) but he died before it was completed.

In Harname (Book of the Ass), which is a small-sized couplet poem of 126 staves, he tells about the misfortune of a donkey that lost his ears whilst admiring the horns of the ox, and thus told the misfortune of his fanciful dreams in a humorous story. Şeyhî left a fine example of satirical literary work when he told his story. Praised by his contemporaries and successors as “Şeyhü'ş-Şuarâ” (The Sheikh of Poets), Şeyhî became one of the master poets of Divan* literature, with his odes, eulogies and couplet poems.
