M. Mehdi Ilhan is a Visiting Fellow at the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics, the Australian National University He was Lecturer of Turkish Language and Culture in the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (The Middle East and Central Asia) at ANU.from 2003 to 2012. He was convener of Turkish Studies at CAIS teaching Turkish Language, Turkish History (Ottoman and Modern). He was also coordinator for the course Islam: History and Institutions and Gallipoli: History and National Imagination. He tutored in subjects such Politics in the Middle East; and Politics in West and Central Asia at CAIS.

Dr. Ilhan is a specialist in History and Socio-economic History of the Ottoman Empire and History of Islam. He has taught Turkish Language at the University of Manchester, History at Ankara University, History and Turkish Language at King Saud University (in Arabic) and History at Al al-Bayt University of Jordan (in Arabic). He has also taught summer courses at the Black Sea University of Romania. Prior to taking up his appointment at the Australian National University in 2003, Dr Ilhan was Professor and Chair of the Department of History, Middle East Technical University, Ankara (1989-2003) where he taught Ottoman History, Socio-economic History of the Ottoman Empire, Islamic History, and Methodology of History.

Dr Ilhan is a member of Turkish Historical Society (Ankara) and the International Committee for pre-Ottoman and Ottoman Studies (CIEPO, Paris). He has not only participated in many national and international conferences and symposiums, but also organized quite a number of seminars and symposiums both in Turkey and Australia. He has acted as referee for a number of journals published in Turkey and Australia and is a member of the board of referees for the journals Tarih İncelemeleri Dergisi, and Tarih Araştırmaları Dergisi. He is the author of numerous works and articles published in Turkish, English and Arabic on Ottoman History including Amid (Diyarbakir): 1518 Detailed Register (Ankara: Turkish Historical Society Press, 2000); "The Katif District (Liva) During the First Few Years of Ottoman Rule: A Study of the 1551 Ottoman Cadastral Survey," Belleten, LI/200, Ankara, 1987; “The Town of Çankiri: Its Population and Development” in Imber, C. and Kiyotaki, K. (eds), Frontiers of Ottoman Studies, vol. 1, London: I.B. Tauris, 2005, pp. 127-138; “Çankırı in History: Insight from Ottoman Documents’ in Roger Matthews and Claudia Glatz (eds.): At Empires’ Edge: Project Paphlagonia, Regional Survey in North Central Turkey, London: British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara 2009, pp. 227-238. His latest publication is Gallipoli: History, Memory and National Imagination, Ankara: Türk Tarih Kurumu (Turkish Historical Society) 2014. He has also organized three international symposiums on Gallipoli Campaign 1915. The fourth one will be held in Istanbul on 15-18 March 2015.

Dr. Ilhan has a BA (Hons) in Arabic and Religious Studies from Leeds University and Ph.D. in History from Manchester University, UK. Turkish is his native language and he is fluent in Arabic and English.
