Mustafa
Kandıralı was born in Kandıra, Kocaeli in 1930. Athough his real surname was
Kadıoğlu, Selahattin Pınar wanted the artist to change his surname and get
Kandıralı because his birth place was Kandıra.
Because
of his family’s economical problems and having 5 siblings he couldn’t complete
middle school.
His
father, who was an amateur clarinet player, registered Kandıralı to the public
house in Kandıra. He couldn’t pick what to play, and got ud.
His
sympathy for clarinet was coming from Şükrü Tunar’s clarinet improvisations on
the radio and since then he started to play clarinet. As he didn’t have a
bağlama, he secretly played his father’s clarinet.
Mustafa
Kandıralı went to a musicians café to find a job and met violin player Ama
Recep and Kanuni Sıtkı Bey, where he found a job. He earned 4 liras by
performing at Tepebaşı Kibar Gazinosu in 1945. He saved money and got courses
by Akopos Alyanak. With the help of this courses he extended his repertoire and
improved his technique.
He
accompanied Esma Engin at Müm Çakır Gazinosu in 1953. His work continued
sequentially and eventually he accompanied Perihan Altındağ Sözeri at Salacak
Üsküdar Gazinosu in 1956, Mediha Demirkıran at Maksim in 1957 and many more
artists. He started playing on the radio on 1957. He was noticed by certain
record labels and in 1957 with the request of Pate-Odeon record label’s owner
he released his first vinyl called “Salon Çiftetellisi”.
He
was deemed worthy of many prizes in his life. On 10th of March he was selected
as a founding member of Boğaziçi Musiki Association and in 1984 in Ankara, he
got the special prize by 1952 graduates of Air Force Military in Ankara. He
also got another prize for helping an hospital construction in Kandıra on 12th
of May 1985.
Besides
the prizes he got in Turkey, he won first place at the Jazz Festival in
Germany, 1992. He released a CD called “Kandıralı and Ensemble Caz Roman” for
this prize.
