He was born in 1956 in Erzincan. He continued his education at Talatpaşa Elementary School, Şişli Secondary School, Zincirlikuyu Building Technical High School and graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Education.

He continued to work in Kagithane Municipality, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and İETT General Directorate.

Later, he left his public service and began to trade.

His political life began with the membership of the Executive Committee of the Youth League, later on;

CHP Youth League Board of Directors Secretariat,

CHP Youth Leadership Board,

CHP District Presidency, Congress Delegation,

SHP 18th Term Istanbul Deputy,

Member of the Presidency of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey,

School Parent Association in F.M.V. Işık High School,

Member of the Board of Directors of the Turkish-German Parliamentary Friendship Group,

Galatasaray Sports Club Board Member,

Turkey National Olympic Committee Member,

The President of the Sports Federation for All,

He has three books titled "Young Parliament in the Turkish Grand National Assembly", "Steering Wheel in Istanbul" and "Neither More or Less”

He was elected to the Municipality of Şişli in 1999 Local Elections. He has been elected mayor for three terms.

He has won various awards due to his works during the Şişli mayoralty;

Rewarded by the Romanian President Ion Iliescu with the State Achievement Award.

He was rewarded by 10th President of Turkey Ahmet Necdet Sezer for his contributions to disabled citizens.

Former Ministers of Education Metin Bostancioglu and Hüseyin Çelik awarded him with support for education.

He supported election campaign of German Social Democratic Party (SPD) in September 2005 and 2008 elections.

He was elected as Mayor for the third time in 2009 local elections.
