Actor in theatre, film and TV
series. He was born on 22 January 1946 in Tashköprü District of Kastamonu. He
is the brother of Mete Unal, one of the Viola artists of the Ankara Opera. She
is the older sister of theater artist Hepşen Akar. Her father is Primary School
teacher Hüseyin Ünal and her mother is Rahiye Ünal.
After completing primary school in
Kırıkkale, which he started in Tosya, he graduated from Ankara Cebeci Secondary
School and high school in Kurtuluş high school and Ankara State Conservatory
(1969), which he entered in 1964.
During his student years, he worked
in Ankara Radio children's club from 1960 to 1964, Ankara Radio's educational
program and “Radio Theater” “behind tomorrow” programs. During the same period,
he acted as an amateur in children's theatre and private theatres. In 1962, she
attended theatre courses in Ankara Halkevi.
Later, he acted in Ankara Halkevi.
He received education from Nüzhet Şenbay, Nurettin Sevin, Suat Taşer, Haldun
Marlalı and Mahir Canova. He also played the lead role in the play “Beyond”
directed by Suat Taser. Between 1963 and 1964, he acted in small roles in Plays
of the Ankara State Theater. He entered the Ankara State Conservatory in 1964.
In 1969, after graduating from the
higher Department of the theater department of the Konsevatuar, he started
working as an actor at the Ankara State Theater. He first played in the film
"Fiddler on the roof" in 1971. "Satan", one of the first
Turkish horror classics, became the film he played for the second time. Between
1971 and 1973, he was assistant to Cüneyt Gökçer in the acting Department of
Ankara State Conservatory. In 1973-1982, he again entered diction, mime, role
and stage classes as a lecturer at the same school.
In 1982, he left Ankara State
Theatre for some special reasons and went to London on a British Council
scholarship and Ankara state theatres information - etiquette. In addition to
his language training, he continued his education by participating in various
rehearsals at the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He
also worked as a guest teacher at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) for two
months in London, working with instructors. He worked at Ankara State Theatre
until 1983. Between 1987 and 2000, he attended role, diction, mime and stage
classes at the theater department of Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory,
and continued his teaching service.
In 1989, he moved to Istanbul
Municipality City Theatres. He portrayed the role of 'Che' in 'Evita'. In 1995,
The Theater founded by Gencay Gürün moved to Istanbul.
1992 at the invitation of the
British Council and the Royal Shakespeare Company, he attended voice and breath
seminars in Stratford. In 1997, he taught a private diction and announcer
course. In 1999, he entered acting and diction courses at Yeditepe University.
In 2000, he taught diction, mime, role and stage at Hacettepe University State
Conservatory. In 2001, he became the head of the theatre department at the same
location.
Cihan Unal made her first marriage
to model Sabiha Tarhan. From this marriage he had a daughter named Irmak. He
made his second marriage to Türkan Şoray, whom he met and fell in love with on
the set of the film Mine. From this marriage, he had another daughter named
Yağmur.
Cihan Unal currently continues his
acting work in theater Istanbul and teaching with the head of the Department of
theater Anasanat of the State Conservatory of Hacettepe University. The artist
is a member of the Centre for Performance Research (Giving Voice) and TODER
(Theatre Players Association) in the UK. In addition, he teaches diction,
announcer and host, voice acting and acting at the Metropolitan Academy of
Communication Sciences.
