Scholar (b.
1869, İzmir - d. 31 January 1946, Ankara). He graduated from İzmir High School
and Teacher Training School (1894). In addition, he received education at
Muslim Theological School and attended the Faculty of Science and the School
for Civil Servants for a while. His career as a teacher, which he started by
giving religion, history and morality lessons at Mercan High School, continued
as a teacher of the Hadis* interpretation and history lessons at the School for
Civil Servants and then at İstanbul University, Faculty of Literature and
Theology, the Law School, Sülaymaniye Collage and the School of Preachers.
During this time he became a distinguished professor.
Other than working as teacher in
many schools, he worked as principal in other higher education institutions
such as İstanbul University and the Institute of Islamic Studies. He was a
member of many scientific commissions such as the Ministry of Education Inspection
and Examination Board and the Islamic Academy, Council for Reform in Religious
Institutions. He retired in 1939.
After
retiring, he worked as the Chairman of Board at the Islamic Turkish
Encyclopedia and wrote many articles in this encyclopedia. The articles of
İsmail Hakkı İzmirli, who was one of the greatest scholars of recent history,
were published in the journals of İstanbul University’s Faculties of Theology
and Literature and in Sırat-ı Mustakim,
Sebillürreşad, Ceride-i İlmiye, Mihrab, Selâmet journals and İkdam, Tasvir and Ulus newspapers in
addition to the encyclopedias in which he wrote articles. He donated nearly
four thousand of his books to the Süleymaniye Library before his death. He was
awarded a letter of appreciation by the Ministry of Education and the Academy
Medal given by the Government of France for his works.
