Storywriter and novelist (b. 2 January 1937, Ezine /
Çanakkale - d. 21 Ocak 2015, İstanbul). Her full name is Afet Ilgaz
(Muhteremoğlu). She graduated from Çapa Institute of Education, Faculty of
Literature, Department of Philosophy and Classical Languages. She worked as a
teacher in İzmit and İstanbul for some time. Later on, she gave up teaching and
established Sınıf Publications together with Rıfat Ilgaz. She worked as a
teacher and administrator at the nursery school, of which she was also the
owner. She collected the Törehan Award from the newspaper Yeni İstanbul
in 1969 with her novel Eşiktekiler (Those at the Doorstep, 1960); the
Turkish Language Association Story Award in 1965 with her story Başörtülüler
(Those Wearing Head Scarves, 1964) and the Writers Union of Turkey Novel Award
in 1993 with her novel Yol (The Road). Her stories were published
firstly in the review Yücel (1956) and later in İstanbul, Türk Dili,
Varlık, Yansıma, Sanat ve Toplum. She used the pen name Afet Muhteremoğlu
in her works until 1968.
Her
first article was published in the newspaper Dünya in 1954. More
recently, she has written articles for the newspapers Yeni Şafak and Millî
Gazete. Her two plays, Annem Annem (Oh My Mum) and Toprak
İnsanları (People of Earth) were broadcast on Turkish Radio and Television
