Bureaucrat and writer (b. 1922, Göztepe
/ İstanbul - d. 5 October 1977, Ankara). He graduated from Haydarpaşa High
School (1940) and İstanbul University, Faculty of Law. He worked as literature
teacher in various schools in İstanbul between 1950-55. He married with Dr.
Emine Suzan (1959) during his post as director of İstanbul Sports and
Exhibition Hall between 1955-63. He had two son named Mehmet Ali and Veli
Selman.
After staying in German between
1963-65, he served as principal clerk of the Ministry of National Education. He
became the Press Consultant of the Union of Chambers of Commerce and
Exchanges between 1966-70. He
continued to serve as the General Secretary of Turkish Petroleum Foundation
which he established in 1970, till his death. His grave is in Sahrayı Cedit
Graveyard in Göztepe.
Gemuhluoğlu who sealed his name as a
heart and service man to our recent history, always stayed away from active
politics although he was always in politic. He was effected on the formation of
the governments with his gathering character and his respectability by the
leaders of political parties in the gap of governance occurred in 1970’s. He
directly got in touch with the cadres of political parties as well as the
intellectuals and he promoted the view of point originated from both the
historical line of Turkey and his accumulation.
He was renowned by his virtuous
character, deep cultural accumulation and his support to lecturers, artists and
scientist in addition to his conversations, which were the distillate examples
of our Sufism culture.
Gemuhluoğlu, who directed his effort to
gather distinct environments in the common ground of love and service, became
an outstanding personality not only for his generation but also next generation
with his connective character originated from his attitude which undertake the
society and humanity as whole.
His articles were published firstly in Arapgir Postası and other reviews and newspapers. A wide crew of intellectuals and
writers drew benefit from his rich culture and opinions, which he reflected in
his private conversations. His speeches, which he made in these conversations,
began to be collected in a book after his death.
