Historian (b. 1949, Kozan /
Adana). He graduated from high school in 1967 and from Istanbul University,
Faculty of Literature, Department of History, Chair of Modern History in 1971
with his thesis Fırka-î İslâhiye ve Kozan
(Reform Party and Kozan). In 1974, he became an assistant at the same
university at the Chair of Modern History; he received his doctorate in 1978
with his thesis XVIII. Yüzyılda Osmanlı
İmparatorluğu’nda İskân Siyaseti (Policy of Settlement in the Ottoman
Empire in the XVIII. Century). He became an assistant professor in 1982 and
then associate professor in 1983 with his thesis Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda Menzil Teşkilâtı ve Yol Sistemi (The
Organization of Way Stations and Road Systems in the Ottoman Empire). In the
academic semester of 1983-84, he studied at Elazığ Fırat University, Faculty of
Science and Literature, Department of History. In 1986 he went to study at
Marmara University, Atatürk Education Faculty, Department of Social Science
Education. He became a professor in 1989 with his thesis XVI. yüzyılda Sosyal, Ekonomik ve Demografik Bakımdan Balkanlar’da Bazı
Osmanlı Şehirleri (Some Ottoman Cities in the Balkans in the XVI. Century
from a Social, Economic and Demographic Aspect). He was elected as a founding
member of the Turkish Historical Society at the same time.
He worked as the head of the
Ottoman Archive Department at the Prime Ministry General Directorate of State
Archives in 1989 and in 1990 he became an assistant to the General Director. He
started the automation of the Ottoman Archive in this period. He left his
office there in 1992 and returned to Marmara University. In the same year he
worked as assistant rector, deputy rector and again as assistant rector. He was
appointed as the Head of the Turkish Historical Society in 1993. He still works
there.
He is a member of the Russian
Natural Sciences Academy, the Governing Board of the International Turkish
World Academy, the center of which is located in Moscow, the Research Center of
Turkish Culture, the Consultancy Board of the Ottoman Research Center, the
International Governing Board of the State Institute for Research of the Civil
Inheritance of the Gündoğar People based in Turkmenistan, the International
Governing Board of the Committee of Pre-Ottoman and Ottoman Studies and he is
the Head of the Consultative Board of the Akhis Research Association.
