Movie director (b. 1
October 1938, Istanbul - d. 18 December 2019, Istanbul). The author Pakize
Başaran is his mother, the theatre actor Meriç Başaran is his sister. He
studied for some time in Faculty of Literature. He worked as a translator. He
was interested in cinema starting from young ages. At the age of seventeen he
left home to take a boat to go to the United States of America to be a movie
director; however he was caught in Adapazarı. He met the director Memduh Ün
while studying in Faculty of Literature. Ün who read a scenario wrote by him
asked him to be his assistant. He worked for Memduh Ün for whom he said
“Whatever I learnt, I learnt from him.” Meanwhile for short periods he worked
as an assistant of Lütfi Akad, Halit Refiğ, Atıf Yılmaz and Ertem Göreç.
In 1964 he worked with
Orhan Kemal whose play Borusunu Öttüren he turned into a scenario. Later he
shot the movies Kara Memet and Bekçi Murtaza. In 1966 he went to military
service. He married the singer Füsun Önal and shot advertisement movies for
some time. Later he turned to his paused movie director position with the movie
Biri ve Diğerleri. This movie granted him Jury Special Prize in 1987 Antalya
Film Festival and in 1988 Best Turkish Movie Prize of Istanbul Film Festival
(known as Istanbul Cinema Days those days). Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar movie
directed by him in 1989 received many national and international awards in
branches of Best Movie and Best Director including 8th International Istanbul
Film Festival. Besides it became a candidate for candidate in Oscar’s best
foreign movie section. After it, Piano Piano Bacaksız (1991) has to be
mentioned. It also was as successful as Uçurtmayı Vurmasınların. Uzun İnce Bir
Yol (1993), Sen de Gitme (1996), Kaçıklık Diploması (1998), Abuzer Kadayıf
(2000) are other recognized works of Başaran.
