Poet (b. 1477, Balıkesir – d. 1546, İstanbul). He taught himself without attending regular Madrasah Muslim Theology School classes. He was a boot-maker in his hometown. He came to İstanbul during the Bayazid II period (1481-1512) and the eulogies that he especially wrote for the emperor were praised. He was supported spiritually and financially especially by Cafer Çelebi. After the poem that he wrote for Yavuz Sultan Selim’s accession to the throne won approval, he was granted two villages that provided a steady income in Balıkesir.

He found himself poor after his benefactor Cafer Çelebi’s death. He rented a shop in the courtyard of Beyazıt Mosque and practiced geomancy and made amulets and also wrote gazel* and kaside * on request. When he died his corpse could only be buried with the money that a few contemporary poets donated. He was buried outside Edirnekapı.

Zati, whose shop was frequently visited by young poets, effected the development of Baki and he was among the most prolific and master poets of his time, but sadly later he was forgotten.

WORKS:
