Writer and translator (b. 23 March
1942, İzmir). He graduated from Ankara Atatürk High School, Ankara University,
Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Department of French Language and
Literature (1968). In 1963, he received his archeology diploma when finishing
the courses of the Ministry of Culture. He served as a translator at the
Ministry of Customs and Excise for two years, as a lecturer at the Faculty of
Language, History and Geography, Department of French Language and Literature
for four years and as a research assistant at Hacettepe University, Faculty of
Social and Administrative Sciences, Department of French Language and
Literature for six years. He did his doctorate research at the Sorbonne in
France and again in France at Grenoble and Nantes Universities, Lausanne
University in Switzerland and Rutgers University in the United States where he
carried out research on literature. He received his PhD at the Faculty of
Language, History and Geography (1981), he was appointed to Cumhuriyet
University, Faculty of Science and Arts, Department of French Language and
Literature (1982) and in 1987 to Hacettepe University, Faculty of Education,
Department of French Language and Literature where he worked as an assistant
associate professor. Later on, he became associate professor (1989) and
professor (1996). In 1997, he became the Head of Department. He retired in
2005.
His articles and translations have
been published in the reviews Yeni Adam,
Karşı Edebiyat, Kıyı, Littera (director of press), Çağdaş Türk Dili (director of press), Varlık, Türk Folkloru,
Oluşum, Dil Dergisi, Edebiyat ve Eleştiri, Cumhuriyet Kitap and the
newspaper, Cumhuriyet since 1972. He continues to work as an editor of Littera,
which has been published since 1990. He has given lectures and conferences at
Ankara, Hacettepe, Middle East Technical, Cumhuriyet, Karaelmas, Gazi and
Bilkent Universities. He has taken part in book signing days at the Fairs and
Exhibitions Organization Inc. book fairs. He has been on the juries of novel,
poetry and translation award competitions. He has given communiqués on Turkish
and world literature at several national and international symposiums. He has
been a broadcaster on TV and radio literature programs. He has published
research on Turkish folklore and handicrafts and he has taken part in
symposiums and on panels. He has been a member of the administrative committee
of the Language Association. He has served as publishing director for the
Contemporary Turkish Language Review. He is still a member of the Turkish
Authors Association and the Assocation des Amis d'André Gide.
