Mümtaz Soysal

     Writer and jurist (b. 1929, Zonguldak). He graduated from Galatasaray High School (1949) and Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences (1953) and Law (1954). After he worked for two years as an assistant at the Institution of Public Administration for Turkey and the Middle East (1953-54), he studied at the London School of Economics and Princeton and Berkeley Universities in America. After he returned to Turkey, he did his doctorate in the Faculty of Social Sciences to where he was appointed as an assistant (1956). He became assistant professor (1959) and professor (1971) in the same faculty. On 24 December 1995 he entered the Turkish Grand National Assembly as a parliamentary deputy. He was the Minister of Foreign Affairs for a while.

Mümtaz Soysal, who was the dean of his faculty for a short period, has taken part in international meetings as a professor of the constitution and is a member of Amnesty International and many law associations. He collected the UNESCO International Human Rights Education Award that was given first in 1979. Since 1985 he has had his articles published in Milliyet newspaper. Over the years his work has been published in Forum, Akis, and Yön (one of the founders), Emek and Ortam reviews and Yeni İstanbul, Ulus, Cumhuriyet and Barış newspapers.
