Economist and political scientist (b. 2 January 1940, Kızılyer / Denizli). He attended Denizli Primary School and graduated from İzmir Atatürk High School and Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences, Department of Economics and Finance. He completed his doctorate degree at Paris and Poitiers Universities (1966-73). He worked as the President of Researchers of the All Teachers Unity and Solidarity Association (1975-76), as a publication and research director on the Chamber of Architects and Engineers Civil Engineers Committee (1976-78), as President of the Social and Political Relations Committee of the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions (1978), as an instructor at the Social Services Academy at Hacettepe University (1978-80) and as an instructor at Bolu Institution of Higher Education of Management (then in Abant İzzet Baysal University, Department of Economics) (1980-93). He is President of the Turkey and Middle East Forum.
When he was in his last post, he was
sentenced to twenty months in prison and was fined forty one million Turkish
Liras because of his book Paradigmanın
İflası (Failure of Paradigm) in
1994. He stayed in Haymana and
Ulucanlar Prisons during his sentence (17 March 1994-16 June 1995). After he
was released he founded the Turkey and Middle East Forum and continued his
activities for “Freedom for Universities” within this foundation. He was again
sentenced to one year in prison because of one of his articles published in
2002; he was detained in Kalecik Prison (Ankara).
His articles have been published in the
newspapers Özgür Gündem, Özgür Ülke,
Demokrasi, Ülkede Gündem, Özgür Bakış. He was given the Honorable Award of
the Human Rights Association in 1994 and that of the Young Journalists
Association in 1995.
