Scriptwriter, translator. He was born in Istanbul, on June 2, 1960. He also used the name Ali Bertan as his signature. Writer Alparslan Berktay and historian Halil Berktay are his relatives. He was graduated from Galatasaray High School. He was graduated from Boğaziçi University Economy Department. He had several duties and acted in Community Actors Theatre, worked as manager in the History Foundation Country Publishing. He also worked as course manager in BEKSAV Theatre workshop and independent translator.

His articles and translations were published in Agon, Evrensel Kültür, Sanat (Editorial board member, 1987-89, Paris) etc. journals. He also wrote lyrics, one of Berktay’s lyrics was composed by Ayşe Emel Mesçi, who has produced some theatre adaptations. He has received 1996 II. Yunus Emre Original Play Grand Prize with his Kerbela play.
