Art historian (b. 1924, İstanbul - d.. 28 May 2018) . After he graduated from Galatasaray High
School, he went to Göttingen and Berlin to study Byzantium History on the
request of his father Mehmet Kamil Efendi, who wanted his son to become a
historian, not an art historian. He first learnt German at the university in
which he educated in Berlin (1944-45). When he returned to Turkey, he graduated
from İstanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of History (1948).
In the same year he became a research assistant.
Between the years of 1950-53, he joined the archeological excavations in
Side organized by Prof. Arif Müfid Mansel. He went to Germany between 1958-59.
He was appointed to the Head of the Department at İstanbul University,
Department of Byzantium Art History in 1964. He continued in this office until
1991 when he retired. Eyice, who has been a part-time professor at universities
in Germany (1974) and France (1976-1983), has made efforts to introduce Turkish
art to Europe besides his research on Byzantium Art.
