Composer (B. January 22nd 1902, Denizli,
Turkey - D. February 6th 1960, Istanbul). His father was Sadık Bey,
who served as a kadi and who was a teacher in Yüksek Ticaret School and one of
the former deputy of Denizli. He got the pleasure of music from his mother who
was playing the oud. He started the Dârülfeyzî School of Music of which the
name was later changed into the Üsküdar Music Society founded in 1920 under the
presidency of Ata Bey. He continued to the Italian Trade School for a while,
but left it before completing and gave himself entirely to music.
Selâhattin Pınar, who involved in the İstanbul Radio
as a tambour player, created its own innovations in the form of classical
Turkish music songs. The songs he composed differed from other composers in
terms of lyrics, progressions and melody structure. Although his works are
difficult, they impress people and are easily remembered. In his songs, he
reflects the inner world that is filled with independent, multi-faceted
emotions.
He
especially used the descending maqams in his works. The 3rd quatrain
of the songs (meyan part) reaches to high-pitched sounds and wanders there a
long time. Descending maqams are very suitable for the implementation of this
feature. Many of his songs were written in a style like talking.
No
sufism, religion and ideology take place in the works of Pınar, the themes such
as devotion to nature, love, excitement, sadness take more place. His mahur song
called Yüce dağdan esen rüzgâr sevgiliye selâm götür has totally an idyllic nature. His
complaints, joy, enthusiasm are always considered with a realistic point of
view.
