Sedat Alp

Arkeolog

Archeologist. He was born in Karaferye / Thessaloniki / Greece (1913). He has won the public examination in 1932 and received Ancient History, Hititology and Sumerology education in Germany. He completed his doctoral studies in Berlin University (1940). He began his academic career as the Hittitology assistant at Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography (1941). He became Hittitology professor (1949) and Distinguished Hittitology Professor (1958) at the same faculty. He was the dean of DTC (1956-1958). He gave lectures as visiting lecturer at several universities such as Münster (1953), London (1959), Berlin (1969), Marburg (1978), Munic (1979), Mainz (1981). He was  the president of First and Third International Hittitology Congresses (1990, 1996).

Sedat Alp has several discoveries and inventions in the branches of Hittitology. His works on Hittitology were published in several languages. He was the head of Konya Karahöyük excavations since 1953. He became a member of Turkish History Institution in 1946; and after conducting several duties at the institution, also was the last president of it before it was shut down (1982-1983). He received the Commendatore Order from Italian President (1957), Order of Merit from Federal Germany President (1972), medallion of Paris College de France (1980), starred Order of Merit from Federal Germany President (1991), Grande Ufficiale Order from Italian President (1991). He received the award of Foundation for Promoting Turkey in 1992. 

He received a honorary doctorate from Würzburg University (1997). He received the honorary awards of Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography (2001), Middle East Technical University Archaeology Society (2001) and Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography (2003). He received Aydın Doğan Foundation Archaeology Award (2003). He is the honorary member of Istanbul University Ancient History Sciences Institute, founder of International Hittitology Congress, President of First and Third International Hittitology Congresses at Çorum and member of British Academy.
