Ahmed Güner Sayar

Economist, researcher-writer. Born on November 6^th, 1946 in Istanbul, Sayar is the son of poet and author Abbas Sayar. He completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics, Istanbul University in 1968. He began to work at that faculty as a research assistant in 1975. He did his post graduate study at the Faculty of Economics, Birmingham University, England (1970-72). He did his doctorate at the Faculty of Economics, Istanbul University (1976) and was promoted as the associate professor (1980) and then as a professor (1988). As from 1982, he continued to conduct his studies at the Faculty of Political Science, Istanbul University as a lecturer. He became the principal of the Division of History of Economics at that faculty.

He published his articles in magazines like Tarih ve Toplum, Toplum ve Bilim, Türkiye Günlüğü, Toplum ve Ekonomi, Dergâh, Türk Yurdu. His specialties are theory of economics and history of economics. His work, published under the title of Osmanlı İktisat Düşüncesinin Çağdaşlaşması, is the most important work of him. His first book A. Süheyl Ünver: Hayatı Şahsiyeti ve Eserleri 1898-1986 (1994), in which he tried to pay debt of gratitude he owed to his teachers, was followed by the book Bir İktisatçının Entellektüel Portresi: Sabri F. Ülgener (1998).

His major fields of interests are the studies which combine “Theory of Economics” and the history. He attaches major important to the relation between theory of economics and analysis of mentality when he examines economic structures. He is the follower of his teacher Sabri Ülgener in that sense. His books and articles are published in various magazines and followed with interest.

Ahmed Güner Sayar has been to Istanbul’s elite neighborhoods, which were full of culture and art since he was student and then. He became one of these people, each of whom were almost monumental personalities, and he continued his self improvement among them. In the ensuing years that influence was reflected in Sayar’s works and published biographies and portraits of those playes and people as a duty of loyalty.
