Otarlanı Kerim

Poet (b. 1912, Girhojan village, Baksan Region-d. 1974 Nalchik). After graduating from School of Pedagogies in Nalchik (1934), he worked as teacher. He fought against German Nazi Units in the side of Soviet Army in 1943 and lost his leg in the war. He wrote poems in spite of the hard conditions of the war. There was a strong lyricism in his war poems.

He was exiled to Middle East with Balkar people who were victimized in 1944 by the regime of Stalin. He dared to write a letter to Stalin telling about these injustices. He returned from Kyrgyzstan to his homeland in 1956. His books were published in Balkar, Russia, Nalchik and Moscow. He served as the president of Writers Union of Kabardino-Balkar between 1938 and 1941. He is a state artist of Kabardino-Balkar Republic.
