Politician. She is the wife of former prime minister, statesman and poet Bülent Ecevit. She was born in 1923 in Bursa. Her family settled from Thessaloniki to Şebinkarahisar.Her father is Namık Zeki Aral, her mother Zahide Aral. She graduated from Ankara High School and Robert College. When party establishments were allowed in 1983, she attempted to establish a social democratic party replacing her husband when he was banned from politics. She was elected as the leader of the established Demokratik Sol Party (DSP). After she handed over her duty to her rehabilitated husband Bülent Ecevit she had an influent position within the party, especially about choosing candidates.

In by-elections of 1986 she stood as a candidate for parliament membership from Izmir; however was not elected. She resigned from Demokratik Sol Party she founded on the 4th of June 2009. She was elected on the 17th of January 2010 as the 2nd party leader of Demokratik Sol Halk Party (DSHP) she was a founder of. She participated to the 33th CHP Congress on the 22nd of May 2010 with the independent parliament member Emrehan Halıcı and declared her support for the only candidate for party leadership Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu who prevailed and to Cumhuriyet Halk Party (CHP). The novel titled Pülümür'de Aşk written by Rahşan Ecevit was adapted to theatre in 2002.
