Hızır Balı

Mystic (B. ? – D. 1516.) His real name is Hızır Bali. The information on him rests on stories. He was accepted as the “breath son”, “path son” and “second master” of Haci Bektas Veli by the members of order. There are rumors that he was the son of Mursel Baba who comes from the family of Kadıncık Ana, the adopted child of Hacı Bektas Veli; and also some information that he is from the Serbian or Bulgarian origin. After the death of Mursel Baba, he became the sheikh of Hacı Bektas Order. On an epitaph in Balım Sultan Tomb next to Haci Bektas Veli Tomb, he is indicated as the son of Resul Bali, descended from Haci Bektas. But some researchers think that Haci Bektas Veli was never married, and he was accepted as the “Sipirutel Son” of Hacı Bektas Veli. According to the stories that established an organic bound between the Balim Sultan and the Ottoman state administration; as he was placed as the head of Haci Bektas Order by Bayezid the Second, he was in a good relation with the Sultan. The breaking of Safavid propaganda in Anatolia was possible because Balim Sultan was the sheikh of Bektashi order and made effective anti-propaganda. The function of Balim Sultan should not be neglected in the process of Bektashi stance next to Ottoman State instead of taking sides with the Safavide.

It is known that Balim Sultan has made some arrangements in Bektashi order and organization was given utmost importance. The branch of Celebis in Bektashi order accepts the novelties conducted by Balim Sultan; but they reject the institutions of “mucerred” and “dede baba”. But it is known that “mucerred status”, the culture of twelve Imams and the opinion of godhead as stated by “Hak-Mohammad-Ali” and the twelve posts ranking were symbolized during Balim Sultan era. Balim Sultan has played an important role in the Bektashi history as the person who achieved to establish an organization within the Bektashi order. There is no written information or works written by Balim Sultan except for the verbal information within the Bektashi tradition. But the dominant opinion is that the “nefes” recorded under his name are not originally his. Some sources record that these poets belong to another Balim Sultan who participated in the conquest of Bursa with Geyikli Baba during the Orhan Gazi period. Another story says that the individual known as Sheikh Edebali has poets under the pseudonym Balim Sultan and these poets had linguistic changes and referred as Balim Sultan’s work.
