Baba Zühdü

Journalist and writer (b. 1869, İstanbul - d. 29 May 1925, İstanbul). He was one of the famous journalists of his time. He was known as "Baba Zühdü" (Father Zühdü). He used the pen name Serâzad as well. He wrote for newspapers that were considered to support the English and in opposition to the rule of the Committee of Union and Progress, which supported the Germans. Starting in his days at school, he worked for Saadet, Tarik, Sabah, Tercüman-ı Hakikat and İkdam newspapers. He worked as a member of the Ministry of Education Literary Works Examination Commission for a while. He published the newspaper Yeni Gazete with Mahmut Sadık during the period of the Second Constitutional Monarchy. While previously he had supported the Committee of Union and Progress, after 31 March he became a supporter of Kâmil Paşa and English politics.

The newspaper he published was closed when the Union and Progress Party came to power with the Babıâli* Attack (23 December 1913). He stopped writing for a while in that period. Later, he published anonymous articles in İkdam and Sabah newspapers, which had the same ideology. He worked as the editorial writer of İkdam during the years of the First World War. After the Mondros Armistice, he wrote for Yeni Gazete, which he republished with Mahmut Sadık, in the French newspaper Le Soir, which he published with Ahmet İhsan (Tokgöz) and in Sabah. For some time he worked as the director of the Press Department of the Friends of England Society, of which he was a founder. He worked as an antique dealer in his later years. His poetry book called Şanlı Asker (Glorious Soldier), which he wrote about the Greek War (1897), aroused great interest. He also translated from Russian.

In addition, he published trans–lations.
