Musicologist. He was born on March 4, 1957 in Ardanuç/Artvin. He completed his primary, secondary and high school education in Tokat because of his father’s duty. He completed Ibn-i Kemal Primary School, Gaziosmanpaşa Secondary School and Gaziosmanpaşa High School. In 1974, he started to work at K.B. Folk Dance Education Center. He attended to Gazi University, Department of Music. As Turkish Music State Conservatory was established in 1975, he has won the Basic Sciences Department examinations and went to Istanbul. He was among the first students and graduates of the conservatory. He has completed the science examinations and started to work as an “assistant”. As the Conservatory was bound to ITU with 1982 YOK Law; he became a lecturer, in 1985 he became an artist lecturer, an assistant professor in 1987 and doctor in 1988, after completing the masters’ and doctoral studies. His masters’ thesis was “ Radyo – Televizyonda Müzik Çalışmaları Nasıl Olmalı?” and doctoral thesis was “Folklorumuzda Türk Halk Müziği ve Türk Halk Oyunları”. He was THO Department Vice Head, Subdivision Head, Instrument Teaching Department vice head, Conservator Executive Board member and Conservatory vice director. He is the member of Turkish Music Foundation, Folklore Institution, ITU TMDK Alumni Association, UNESCO CID (Council for International Dance) Consultancy Council Member, Prime Ministry GSGM THM Consultancy Council, Prime Ministry GSGM THO Federation Supervisor and ITU TMDK Alumni Association. He is married to Fatma Özden Ay; and father of two children – Esra Aslihan and Eren Berkan.

His first article (Turkish Music and our Conservatory) was published in the first issue of Meydan magazine in December 1980. He has also published articles in Folklor journal, sanatalemi.net, musikidergisi.net, müzikoloji.org. He worked as choir singer and conductor in THM choirs of several universities, associations etc. He has attended to music symposiums and submitted papers; he has also edited several symposium books. He worked as a consultant for several TV programs at TRT and Channel 6. He has participated as a speaker in symposiums about music organized by universities, associations and civil society organizations.
