Poet, folklorist and writer of children’s literature (b. 15 February 1915, Meyre village / Bozkır / Konya - d. 30 October 1994). He is the father of Ülkün Tansel, writer of children's literature and Prof. Dr. Aysıt Tansel. After he finished Pertevniyal High School (1934), he graduated from İstanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Turkish Language and Literature. He worked as a teacher and director in secondary and high schools in Mardin, Akhisar, Eskişehir, Amasya, Konya. He retired in 1969. He is an honorary member of The Turkish Authors Association and a member of the Writers Syndicate of Turkey.

His first poem was published in the journal Servet-i Fûnün in 1937; his first article was published in Halk Bilgisi Haberleri in 1938. His poems published in the journals Servetifünun and Varlık were in syllabic meter. His other poems and articles appeared in the journals Varlık, Kaynak, Yeditepe, Şairler Yaprağı, Dost, Güney, Kıyı, Türk Dili.  He wrote his poems in free verse after 1947. His poems, which were set to music by Prof. Dr. Bruce Reiprich from the United States, were sung in the United States and in Turkey between the years 1994 and 1996. With forty seven examples of folk tales he contributed to the catalogue Typen Turkischer Volksmaarchen (Styles of Turkish Folk Tales) published by W. Eberhard and Pertev Naili Boratav, he became the biggest contributor to the work.

As well as being an original poet of Turkish literature, he was a master of folk tales. When he was a student at Konya High School, he turned towards scientific research with the encouragement of his teacher Pertev Naili Boratav. He contributed greatly to Turkish folklore and literature with the folk tales he collected from places he visited and through his research. His poems have been translated into English, German, Danish and Korean; his folk tales have been translated in to German and Azeri Turkish. He won the 1977 Turkish Language Association Children’s Literature Competition Award with his work Allı ile Fırfırı (In Red and Twirling, 1976).

Tansel who worked as Director of the Konya Teachers Association between 1950 and 1955 pioneered the first picture, photo and poem exhibition in Konya and he organized the first exhibitions of many painters who became famous in the following years.
