Researcher
of literature and statesman (b. 5 November 1943, Sürmene / Trabzon). He settled
in İstanbul with his family in 1953. He completed his primary education, which
he had begun in Sürmene, at Fethiye Primary School in Fatih. After finishing
Rami Secondary School, he attended the Eyüp High School in 1964 and graduated
from İstanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Turkish Language
and Literature (1968). After 1968, he worked as a teacher of literature and
director at Akçaabat High School (1969-72) and as a teacher of literature at
İstanbul Haydarpaşa Technical High School (1972-74). He became a lecturer at
İstanbul University, Institute of Turkology in 1974 and an assistant at the
same faculty in the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, Chair of New
Turkish Literature in 1978. In 1981 his doctorate thesis was Menemenlizâde Mehmed Tahir
(Menemenlizade Mehmed Tahir). He became an assistant professor in 1985, an
associate professor in 1990 and a professor in 1996.
He gave seminars
on the methodology of Turkish language teaching to Turkish language teachers in
Cologne in 1986. He worked as a guest academician at the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus Doğu Akdeniz University, Department of Turkish Language and
Literature in academic semester of 1997-98.
He was member of
the Atatürk Culture, Language and History Advanced Association (1986 – 1999,
member of the executive board), the Turkish Language Association and the
Science and Execution Board. Between the years 1989 and 1992 he worked as an
assistant director at the Turcology Research Center. He became the Chairman of
İstanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Turkish Language and
Literature. In 2003, he became the Undersecretary of Ministry of National
Education.
His
