Derviş Ahmed Dede Efendi

Historian (b. 1631, Thessalonica - d. 1702, Mecca). He took lessons from the well-known scholars of the time in İstanbul. Improving his knowledge of medicine and astronomy, apart from education at Madrasah Muslim School, he was later appointed Chief Astrologer (1665) and he became the gentleman-in-waiting to Mehmed IV. After the sultan was dethroned, he was exiled to Cairo (1687). Later he became the Sheikh of the Mecca Mevlevi Dervish lodge where he had gone on pilgrimage. Although he was invited back to his former job, he did not accept. He spent his remaining life in Mecca.

Although Dervish Ahmed Dede Efendi, known as “Chief Astrologer”, wrote many works on religion, medicine, astronomy, ethics and music, he is famous for his world history in Arabic, Camiü’d-Düvel (Union of the Great Powers), generally known as Müneccimbaşı Tarihi (The History of the Head Astrologer) This famous work contains world and Ottoman history to the year 1671. The Anatolia Seljuk section of this work was translated into Turkish by Hasan Fehmi Turgal (1935), The Karahan section by Necati Lugal (1940) and the Ottoman section by Erünsal (1935).
